Tragedy as Hunter Kills Self

A hunting expedition by some young men at Arigidi-Akoko in Akoko North West Local Government Area of Ondo State turned tragic on February 23, when one of the hunters, Abiodun Olanipekun, killed himself.

THISDAY gathered that the deceased was reported to have mistakenly shot himself with his own dane gun when the hunting equipment disappointed him after he targeted a game.

A source said when the gun refused to release bullets at the time the deceased pulled the trigger to kill an animal, he stopped to repair it.

The gun was said to have released bullets at his neck killing him instantly.
Olanipekun’s colleagues were later arrested and taken to Oke-Agbe, the headquarters of the local government.

An uncle of the deceased, Mr. Dele Ajayi, confirmed the death of the hunter.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state Police Command, Mr. Wole Ogodo, confirmed the incident.

Ogodo said the traditional ruler of the town, the Zaki of Arigidi, Oba Yinusa Olanipekun, reported that the deceased went on a hunting expendition at Agbaluku forest with others but suddenly shot himself with his dane gun.

He said the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the mortuary for post mortem examination while investigation into the incident continues.
