Nigeria should adopt parliamentary system of governance- Gov Aregbesola

Ogbeni at the Harvard

Governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola on Sunday declared that time has come for Nigeria to change its system of government from presidential to parliamentary style because of the expensive nature of the present approach.

Addressing newsmen in Washington, D. C., Ogbeni Aregbesola noted that the parliamentary style of governance should be considered as a viable option to promote effective distribution and use of the nation’s resources.

He added that adoption of the parliamentary system has become imperative to facilitate the reversal to regional style of administration and as a means of reducing the number of states in the country.

The State of Osun governor also canvassed the need to adopt the 1963 constitution because it mostly contains what the nation needs to achieve good federalism.

Ogbeni Aregbesola observed that the 1963 constitution remains the plausible answer for achieving good federalism since Nigeria’s federal structure was destroyed in 1966 after the first military coup.

Rauf Aregbesola’s call for a reversal to a parliamentary system of government sounds plausible because of the reason he has given -to reduce the cost of running governments. However, as good as his idea may sound, the issue with Nigeria is not the type of government the country has; the problem with the country is allowing wrong, selfish, corrupt people to be in government. If a record of honest spending of the governments in Nigeria can be compiled and made visible to the public, Nigerians may be surprised that what their political actors and actresses have stolen is far more that what they put on projects for development.
