GOVERNOR Babatunde Fashola Thursday berated the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) over its call on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF).
Fashola, who spoke at the 6th Lagos Taxation Stakekeholders` Conference in Ikeja GRA dared the PDP to carry out its threat to sue the state government, saying he was more than ready to face them in court.
The state chapter of the PDP had earlier this week urged the EFCC to probe the funding as well as other activities of the LSSTF, describing operation of the agency as “more theoretical than practical.”
But Fashola said the state government has judiciously put to use funds received from individuals and corporate organisations’ philanthropic donations to equip the Nigeria Police despite being the primary responsibility of the Federal Government.
The governor said: “I heard that PDP wants to sue the Lagos State government to court to stop the LSSTF from functioning. This is an outfit set up on voluntary donations, to help discharge the obligation, which their party has to the police, which they have failed to discharge. I have news for them; they should make my day because we will meet them in court.
“I think they are getting closer to dancing naked in the public. This is because the welfare and the provision of other basic equipment to the police is their responsibility. They budget money every year for security but policemen cannot buy uniforms. They do not have vehicles for patrol. They do not have fuel to power existing vehicles.
“Then a government sits down here, create innovative ideas on how to fund the police in its state, a problem that is not its responsibility, it goes to its citizens to plead for fund for the police that are not controlled by the state government all in the interest to protect the lives of its citizens.
