Apr 4th, 2010 | By Bankole Alao David | Category: South West News

Proprietors and proprietress of illegal private schools in Ondo State are now jittery over plans of the state government to close down illegal and substandard private schools in the state.

Indications emerged at the weekend that the state government had finalised arrangements to shut down these illegal schools.

The action of the government may not be unconnected with the accident that claimed over 25 lives involving one private nursery and primary school pupils at Ore in Odigbo LocaL Government Council Area of the state.

The proprietor, two teachers and the driver of the school also died in a ghastly auto crash. The state government said the school was not registered with the state Ministry of Education.

OSUN DEFENDER gathered that the state government had sent out a team of inspectors from the Ministry of Education to check the authenticity and standard of private schools in the state.

The categories of schools that may likely be affected include nursery and primary schools as well as secondary schools without accreditation.

Other yardsticks that may be used in the closure of the illegal schools include lack of poor school structures, school without qualified teachers and those without management.

It was also gathered that the state government was planning to ensure that the people of the state take advantage of the opportunities it is putting in place in public schools.

The move is also to discourage illegal and unjustified fees that most private schools charge. More importantly, the exercise that may last for some weeks, was aimed at preventing a replicate of the tragedy that occurred at Ore.
