Osun Compatriots: Don’t Be Fooled Again

Jan 30th, 2010 | By admin | Category: EDITORIAL

Whatever happens from now on, all true democrats in Osun state must guard their loins and prepare for what if it is worked for, will be a glorious future. The edifying scenes at the funeral of the faithfully departed former chairman of DHL, Chief Komolafe, is a pointer to the future.

The mammoth crowd, the genuine outpouring of grief, the demands made in a non-negotiable manner that the culprits be brought to book, show very clearly that the resolve of the people of Osun state is unshakable. In our local patois, we refer to this unbending resolve as – no shaking! In Latin America they say that – ‘a people united, will never be defeated!’ if the builders of the gulag in Osun state, think that the people have been cowed by their dastardly acts, they must have been jolted by the response to Chief Komolafe’s funeral cortege. The funeral ceremony edified the memory of a great man, brought great shame on his killers and harbingers a new, democratic renaissance in Osun State.

As the great America rock band of the 1970’s famously intoned – we must never stop thinking about tomorrow. No where does this refrain have greater meaning in Nigeria today than our own Osun state. Perhaps, our headline is a shade pessimistic. It is rather debatable whether they were really fooled. On the contrary, it can be claimed that they had an instinctive understanding that the subversion of the wish of the people will be sustained at great cost. Their fears have since come to pass. The state lies in a comatose position. Everything is at a standstill. There is only one way to redress the situation and that is to fight back. Fight back we must and will. Not just for the memories of the Komolafe’s but for those of the unknown and the unsung who have paid a terrible price at the hands of the Obasanjo/Oyinlola constructed gulag.

Under the constitution of the Federal Republic, there must and will be, legislative elections in Osun as elsewhere next year in 2011. Preparations must be in full gear for what should be turned into a watershed event. At every ward level down to the street level, the banner of the progressive alternative must be sown into the soil. The organs of civil democratic society under the aegis of CODER must be translated into a popular democratic front. We have already seen the gains of ‘enough is enough.’ Here, Professor Wole Soyinka and his confederates have shown the way. They have with devastating precision shown what a determined, invigorated civil society can do. They have set an example which must be followed.

The citizens of Osun State have seen enough not to be fooled by the sugar coated tongues of hustlers and opportunists. The problem is of course not with the citizens but with the denizens. An elite clique have unabashedly and unashamedly supported or collaborated with the Oyinlola imposition’s fascism. This clique have in the face of a jackbooted fascism, irresponsibly seen no evil. Virtually all of them have written themselves into the book of infamy. Since they cannot be reformed because they have gone too far down the road of perfidy, they must then be exposed. A key part of the agitprop of civil society must be to explain to the citizens of Osun society exactly who the stumbling blocks are. We must explain their raison d’etre and point out the pecuniary benefits they have received from profiting from the misery of our people.

It will be a long and hard struggle such as the one to be embarked upon will task the heart and the soul of men and women. It is however a struggle that we cannot escape from. We have an historic responsibility to generations yet unborn to so do. Times like the one we are in, reminds one of the admonition of King Henry IV of England to his troops on the eve of the decisive battle of Ag in court against France. His words resonate even today: “He, who has no stomach, for this fights let him depart.’ We in Osun who uphold the banner of justice, fair play and democracy are in a similar situation. We will not depart from the heat of the struggle. The forces of retrogression, of fascism must be confronted and met head on! We must ensure, that they shall not pass!

We must not bow our heads down in Osun state and allow ourselves to be trampled upon again. Next year’s legislative elections must be prepared for now. It must be fought on the basis of mass, popular participation. All the popular, patriotic and progressive tendencies must be united under one banner of progressive action and transformation. There must be no shaking, no doubts, for victory for the forces of progress and of enlightenment is certain.
